What is a Bavarian engine exchange?

A Bavarian engine exchange (also called a core exchange or trade-in replacement) means you receive a tested replacement BMW engine while returning your failed unit as a core. Workshops use exchanges to reduce upfront cost and keep reusable blocks, heads, and turbos in circulation.
At Bavarian Engines, we primarily sell outright used BMW engines with full documentation. We also discuss core returns and exchange pricing on request for trade customers and repeat workshops — especially on high-volume families like N47, N57, and M57.
How the exchange process works
- Quote — send VIN, engine code, and photos of your failed unit
- Core deposit — some exchanges include a refundable core charge until we receive your engine
- Dispatch — replacement engine ships from Hamburg on a pallet or in a crate
- Return — you send the failed core back within the agreed window (drained of fluids, same family)
- Refund — core deposit released after inspection, or credit applied to your account
Engines must be complete long blocks where stated — missing major components may reduce core value. Contact us before stripping the donor.
Exchange vs outright purchase
| Outright purchase | Engine exchange | |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Full engine price | Often lower + core deposit |
| Old engine | You keep or scrap | Must return as core |
| Best for | Private owners, one-off jobs | Workshops with regular volume |
| Warranty | 6 months standard | Same — on replacement unit |
